The facilities are purposely kept freezing cold. Immigrants call them las hieleras (“iceboxes,” “coolers,” or “refrigerators”).
At this point, many in these detention centers are suffering from colds, bronchial infections, and other preventable illnesses. One woman’s ankle was swollen with cuts, and bruises from her ankle bracelet being too tight!
The silver things you see here are actually human beings wrapped in mylar sheets.
